SAIMM - THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGYThe Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM in collaboration with the Canadian Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) is proud to host . This will undoubtedly position Namibia as a major uranium mining hub and will see the industry playing a more significant role in the national and regional economies. Uranium as a material, and its applications, are often controversial. Yet, nuclear reactors are still being built despite the growth in energy generation through renewable sources and despite highly publicised nuclear accidents. Several countries are pursuing uranium enrichment programmes. Although prices are currently subdued, it is highly likely that there will be continued and sustained demand for uranium for the foreseeable future. This conference aims to bring together professionals in the uranium industry. A broad range of topics will be discussed, ranging from mining to some of the applications of uranium, and including safety, and post- operations closure and remediation issues. It is fitting that the conference takes place in Swakopmund, Namibia. Not only do Namibia and this town have much to offer in scenic beauty, but Swakopmund (apart from being a favourite seaside resort) may also be said to be the centre of uranium extraction in the country. Most mines are located in the Namib Desert, within easy driving distance of the conference venue. Uranium mining is a very important sector in the Namibian economy, and has been for many years. This evidence was first discovered in 1. Charleston section of the island. Various Clovis artifacts have been discovered since then, on property owned by Mobil Oil. The island was probably abandoned later, possibly because of the extirpation of large mammals on the island. Evidence of the first permanent Native American settlements and agriculture are thought to date from about 5,0. The Dutch named the island as Staaten Eylandt (literally . The Dutch explorers came to the New York harbor and spotted the land. They asked themselves: . In 1. 62. 6 the colony transferred to the island of Manhattan, which was newly designated as the capital of New Netherland. The Dutch did not establish a permanent settlement on Staaten Eylandt for many decades. From 1. 63. 9 to 1. Cornelis Melyn and David de Vries made three separate attempts to establish a permanent settlement on the island, but each time the settlement was destroyed in the conflicts between the Dutch and the local tribe. Many French Huguenots, who were Protestant, had gone to the Netherlands as refugees from the religious wars in France; some joined the emigration to New Netherland. The last vestige of Oude Dorp is the name of the present- day neighborhood of Old Town, adjacent to Old Town Road. In 1. 67. 1, in order to encourage an expansion of the Dutch settlements, the English resurveyed Oude Dorp (which became known as Old Town) and expanded the lots along the shore to the south. These lots were settled primarily by Dutch families and became known as Nieuwe Dorp (meaning . The following year, he settled on Staten Island, where he was granted a patent for 9. According to one version of an oft- repeated but inaccurate tale, Capt. Billopp's seamanship secured Staten Island to New York, rather than to New Jersey: the Island would belong to New York if the captain could circumnavigate it in one day, which he did. Mayor Michael Bloomberg perpetuated the myth by referring to it at a news conference in Brooklyn on February 2. As part of this process, Staten Island, as well as several minor neighboring islands, was designated as Richmond County. The name derives from the title of Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, an illegitimate son of King Charles II. In 1. 68. 7 and 1. English divided the island into four administrative divisions based on natural features: the 5,1. Thomas Dongan in the northeastern hills known as the . These divisions later evolved into the four towns of Castleton, Northfield, Southfield, and Westfield. In 1. 69. 8, the population was 7. By 1. 70. 8, the entire island had been divided up in this fashion, creating 1. Dongan estate and a 1. Christopher Billop (Jackson, 1. In 1. 72. 9, a county seat was established at the village of Richmond Town, located at the headwaters of the Fresh Kills near the center of the island. By 1. 77. 1, the island's population had grown to 2,8. On March 1. 7, 1. British forces under Lord Howe evacuated Boston and sailed for Halifax, Nova Scotia. From Halifax, Howe prepared to attack New York City, which then consisted entirely of the southern end of Manhattan Island. General George Washington led the entire Continental Army to New York City in anticipation of the British attack. Howe used the strategic location of Staten Island as a staging ground for the invasion. Over 1. 40 British ships arrived over the summer of 1. Staten Island at the entrance to New York Harbor. The British soldiers and Hessian mercenaries numbered about 3. Howe established his headquarters in New Dorp at the Rose and Crown Tavern, near the junction of present New Dorp Lane and Amboy Road. There the representatives of the British government reportedly received their first notification of the Declaration of Independence. In August 1. 77. 6, the British forces crossed the Narrows to Brooklyn and outflanked the American forces at the Battle of Long Island, resulting in the British control of the harbor and the capture of New York City shortly afterwards. Three weeks later, on September 1. Lord Howe received a delegation of Americans consisting of Benjamin Franklin, Edward Rutledge, and John Adams at the Conference House on the southwestern tip of the island (known today as Tottenville) on the former estate of Christopher Billop. However, the Americans refused a peace offer from Howe in exchange for withdrawing the Declaration of Independence, and the conference ended without an agreement. On August 2. 2, 1. Battle of Staten Island occurred here between the British forces and several companies of the 2nd Canadian Regiment fighting alongside other American companies. The battle was inconclusive, though both sides surrendered over a hundred troops as prisoners. The Americans finally withdrew. In early 1. 78. 0, while the Kill Van Kull was frozen solid due to a brutal winter, Lord Stirling led an unsuccessful Patriot raid from New Jersey on the western shore of Staten Island. It was repulsed in part by troops led by British Commander Francis Rawdon- Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings. British forces remained on Staten Island for the remainder of the war. Most Patriots fled after the British occupation, and the sentiment of those who remained was predominantly Loyalist. Even so, the islanders found the demands of supporting the troops to be heavy. The British army kept headquarters in neighborhoods such as Bulls Head. Many buildings and churches were destroyed for their materials, and the military's demand for resources resulted in an extensive deforestation by the end of the war. The British army again used the island as a staging ground for its final evacuation of New York City on December 5, 1. After their departure, the largest Loyalist landowners fled to Canada and their estates were subdivided and sold. Rooms at the hotel were reserved months in advance as local abolitionists and prominent free blacks prepared for the festivities. Speeches, pageants, picnics, and fireworks marked the celebration, which lasted for two days. In 1. 86. 0, parts of Castleton and Southfield were made into a new town, Middletown. The Village of New Brighton in the town of Castleton was incorporated in 1. Village of New Brighton annexed all the remainder of the Town of Castleton and became coterminous with the town. The Conference House was built by Captain Christopher Billopp in 1. This grand stone manor overlooks the Arthur Kill and Perth Amboy, New Jersey. His grandson, Colonel Christopher Billopp, owned the house when it was taken over by Admiral Lord Richard Howe, head of the British Forces in the Americas. Consolidation with New York City. Although consolidated into the City of Greater New York in 1. Staten Island maintained control of the jail system, unlike the other boroughs who had gradually transferred control of the jails to the NYC Department of Corrections. The jail system was not transferred until January 1, 1. Years later Staten Island became (and still is) the only borough without a NYC Department of Corrections major detention center. S Hwy 9. 5A, Fernley, NVIf you never been to a lantern festive before, you MUST go!! It was a beautiful experience. Words and pictures can't describe how beautiful it was.. Bring ur own food/snacks, drinks and chair! They had food trucks, but it was expensive : \ Bring a sweater because it gets really cold when the sun goes down. The only negative thing was the traffic! Traffic was a pain in the butt! One way in & one way out! Imagine that with 1. It took us 2 hours to get out. They really need someone to direct traffic or have more exit route. Bucketlist - -- check! They give adults a wrist band to wear. At check in you have the option to buy more lanterns. I can't speak for all the other stuff they say on the website (Face painting, food trucks, etc) because by the time we got there, it was al about finding a spot. We got there later than most so all firepits were taken. Bring your ticket from parking- bring it to the stage to get firewood.. As the sun sets and it gets dark, you get anxious and want to set off your lantern. Many people set off their lanterns early- which the host kept saying not to due to firecode. I think we actually launched around the 8- 9 pm hour. The event started at 4. PM. When we got to the raceway, we noticed there was only one entrance/exit. We already knew it was going to be a pain to leave the event. We got there a little after 4: 3. PM and there were several rows of cars before us. As we walked towards the event area, we scanned our tickets and picked up our lantern kit which consisted of our lantern, 2 wooden skewers, a marker, a lighter, and a s'more kit minus the chocolate. We walked further towards the racetracks to look for an empty camp area but all the camp areas were taken! Luckily, we found a couple who were willing to share their camp area with us. There was face painting, a bouncy house, and free candy for kids. There were competitions for kids and adults (hula hoop competitions, juice- chugging competitions for kids, and root beer- chugging competitions for adults). There was a juggling act and live music for everyone. There were also food trucks and vendors selling alcohol. We didn't actually light the lanterns until a little after 9pm when it got dark enough. This was literally an all day event. We were all anxious to light our lanterns but the long wait and the anticipation was worth it. The release of the lanterns into the sky was absolutely beautiful. Something about 6,0. I felt like I was the movie Rapunzel. To top it all off, my friend got proposed to. It made this event even more memorable. It took us almost 2 hours to leave the raceway due to traffic leaving the event. And there were many cars behind us. That was the only sucky part. I recommend bringing lawn/beach chairs, food/snacks, a sweater or a light jacket, a light blanket, and a cooler for drinks. Definitely take a soft- top cooler with wheels or a wagon. The parking lot to the racetracks is not a short walk. Have been wanting to attend one of these for a while. Was told by the GF that it was a tangled movie reference but never really got the chance to watch the whole movie before attending the event. Made it even more tiring. The driving took 4 hours and a bit to get there through all the windy roads among the mountains. Tickets were cheap, only $3. Las Vegas. Arriving at the venue which was a motor speedway in the middle of no way, there was decent amount of cars even though almost a hour prior of gate opening. The speedway was filled with torches and fire pits for everyone to claim. We had decent sized group of around 1. The entrance had two inflated owls which looked like the electric daisy carnival mascot. In the venue there were a few food trucks and Stage set in the middle of the speedway for announcements and performances. Since there were only like 4 food trucks.. There were really long lines .. More food truck options would have created a Better food experience for this event. I bought garlic fries for 3. Thai wrap for $9. There were also face painting, bull riding ride and bounce house for the kids. Portable pottys were located on two sides of the speedway and seemed sufficient. Didn't really pay attention to the performances and contests they had in the middle stage but it seemed mehhhh. Waited from 4pm- 9pm for the launching of the lanterns. AS bad as it seemed. We all decorated the lantern with meaningful pictures and quotes as supplies were provided while roasting our smore's. The launch was magical. There was a count down for everyone to light up their lanterns and let go of them. However there wasn't enough torches for everyone to light up at once so people gradually let theirs go. It was an amazing few minutes and definitely worth an experience at least once. It was an experience that one must try themselves to grasp the stunning Kodak moment. Leaving the parking lot was a disaster and traffic was so backed up. However, I found a back route of the speedway where everyone eventually followed through and I was out earlier than expected. Although it was a long journey to get there and back, I still had a magical experience with my gf and friends! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience something out of the ordinary. Perhaps I will be back for another magical moment. This is definitely something you must experience at least once in your life. I have been wanting to go to this event for about two years and I finally made it! If you've watched Tangled, you'll love it - it's just like the lantern scene! We ordered our tickets a couple months before the actual event so we paid around $3. Prices increase as it gets closer to the event and let me warn you, it does get sold out! Doors opened at 4: 3. Parking was $5 (bring cash!) Parking was very easy. Staff was very organized - they directed each car to specific parking spots so nobody really had trouble finding a spot. Tickets are then scanned at the entrance and you receive wristbands. You pick up your paper lanterns, sticks (for s'mores), and box of goodies afterwards. Each box contained a lighter, graham crackers, and marshmallows. I thought it was weird that they gave us all these materials for s'mores, but they forgot to give us chocolate. They eventually gave it to everyone later in the evening, maybe to avoid melting in the sun? I suggest following the list of things they ask you to bring. Chairs and mats are necessary. You don't want to be sitting on the dusty floor where there might be fire ants crawling around (there were huge ones around the parking lot, yikes). I recommend bringing board games or anything to keep you occupied until the sun sets. It took about five hours for the official lantern launch. While you wait, you can enjoy a couple of the activities they provide (most are for kids though) like bull riding, face painting, and balloon animals. There was also an MC who tried to hype up the crowd, but I'm not so sure if anyone really paid attention to him. There were about 4- 6 food trucks, 3 of them serving actual food while the others served alcohol and ice cream. Because there were 6,0. A refill on my watermelon lemonade took about 3. Perhaps next year, have more food trucks to accommodate the number of people at the event to reduce ridiculously long wait times. Once it got closer to the launch time, they served us firewood where we could make s'mores with. Oh.. before it gets dark, be sure to decorate your lantern! It was around 9: 1. The MC gave the crowd directions: 1) Open up your lantern and fill it up with air so it forms its shape. Have a partner hold the top/sides of your lantern while you hold the bottom over the torch. Fill your lantern with hot air until it looks presentable! Release your lantern (well.. It was pretty rushed though. We were supposed to let our lanterns go in unison, but it was impossible to do so since everyone takes turns lighting up our lanterns. So everyone just let them go when they were ready. The sky still looked beautiful/pretty regardless. It was just as I had imagined it (just like the scene in Tangled!!!!!!) I would love to do this every year. It really was so amazing. The only reason I am giving this a four stars, however, is the lack of food trucks/things to do, and how difficult and chaotic exiting the parking lot was. You gotta be kidding me. We were lucky to find a back route up some hill and were able to get out pretty quickly. Tips: You should come early to claim your own fire pit, but don't be afraid to share with others! Highly recommend this festival!!! I think they do it both in the spring and also the fall! I have always wanted to go to a lantern festival and I finally got to experience this great event!! I wish there were clearer instructions honestly and that's why it's only a 4 star. Things to know - 1) Chocolate isn't included in the boxes for the smores, for reasons unknown, so hold onto the box until they tell you to bring up the lighter inside to show for a chocolate bar. You can delegate one person in your group to show all the lighters and bring back the chocolate. Make friends with the people at the pits if you can't get one to yourself. There are only so many tiki torches and fire pits due to fire hazards. Parking is a beezy afterwards and is hard to find our car in the dark. There are perks to being late as you're closer to the exit but you won't get your own fire pit : (4) Checking in is through the people standing with i. Phones/phones.
